Official: Benzema out of Atleti game

Medical tests carried out on Tuesday morning have confirmed that Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema will miss Wednesday’s game with Atletico Madrid.

The Frenchman was ruled out of the Champions League quarter-final second-leg clash at the Santiago Bernabeu after it was revealed he has sprained a ligament in his right knee, and will therefore be unavailable for the game.

Benzema picked up the problem during the first leg against Atleti at the Vicente Calderon last week and was forced to miss the 3-1 victory over Malaga at the weekend, while the last training session he took part in was last Friday, when he had a heavily bandaged knee and could not continue.

Club doctors subsequently decided the player must undergo the necessary scans at the Sanitas La Moraleja hospital in the Spanish capital, which confirmed the bad news, and a statement disclosed he is suffering from ‘a sprain to the medial collateral ligament in the right knee’.

The 27-year-old joins Luka Modric, who also has a sprained knee, and Gareth Bale, with a calf injury, on the sidelines for the game, while left-back Marcelo will sit it out through suspension.
