‘Cordoba still believe in survival’

Jose Antonio Romero has insisted that Cordoba can still avoid relegation from La Liga ahead of Sunday’s encounter with Elche.

The basement boys – nine points adrift with eight matches remaining – ended a run of 10 successive defeats with a 1-1 draw at Deportivo La Coruna midweek, and the Coach has urged his side to keep the faith.

“Why can’t we beat Elche and boost our goal difference today? Of course we can [stay up],” he asked at a Press conference.

“In this phase during the first half of the season, we were competitive and at an optimal level.

“We’re only interested in what we can do, not what we can’t do. We shouldn’t be tired [from midweek], the players must have the desire to play.

“All of Elche’s players have a certain profile, with a powerful striker in Jonathas. They also have good organisation and dynamics to be superior on the counter.

“Our problems lie in three categories: mental, emotional and physical. We must embrace our situation in order to recharge ourselves.”
