Suarez makes Madrid confession

Luis Suarez has confessed that he turned down an offer from Real Madrid before signing for Barcelona last summer.

The former Liverpool striker joined the Catalans for a club-record €81m fee after the 2014 World Cup, but while he was also courted by Los Blancos, he admits the lure of plying his trade at Camp Nou was too good to resist.

“[Real] Madrid were very interested in me, but my dream was always Barca,” he told Cadena COPE.

“When I heard of Barca’s interest, I didn’t hesitate [to join them] at any moment.

“Barça are the best team in the world, no doubt. I’m obliged to win every title on offer here.

“The fans are used to tiki-taka, but nowadays football is very tight and you have to be more direct and powerful. Barcelona’s fans must get used to suffering.

“Lionel Messi] is a great teammate and very humble. To play alongside him and Neymar is a privilege.

“[Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo]? Messi.

“Every time Neymar gets the ball, he wants to cause damage to his opponents. He knows what’s asked of him and delivers.

“Xavi [Hernandez] and [Dani] Alves are essential to this club.

“I'm still surprised [by Andres Iniesta’s quality] because he does things you can’t imagine. He’s spectacular.

“I am satisfied with my performances because I feel like I’m helping the team play well, either with goals, assists or hard work.

“However, there are still people who don’t realise the things I do which benefit the team on the pitch.”
