Marcelino: ‘Villarreal deserved a point’

Villarreal boss Marcelino believed his side were worthy of the point picked up in the goalless draw at Valencia on Sunday.

“We are proud to have competed at such a high level against a great team that is the best in the League at home,” he told a post-match Press conference.

“We were clearly superior to Valencia in the first half as they never threatened us and after the break we had the situation under control. They only created two clear-cut chances in the whole 90 minutes.”

Marcelino was also involved in an argument as whether the pitch at Mestalla should have been watered prior to the game and was not happy with Valencia’s decision to not do so.

“They said the sprinklers had broken down but if they had watered the pitch it would have been a more dynamic match.

“In European competition both clubs agree if it should be watered or not but in La Liga the decision rests with the home team, so I don’t have to answer to anyone.

“However, I’m satisfied with our display despite the fact a dry pitch made it a difficult game.”
