Nuno: ‘Only Valencia wanted to win’

Valencia boss Nuno Espirito Santo said there was only one team that wanted to win following his side’s goalless draw with Villarreal at Mestalla.

The Portuguese saw Los Che relinquish third place in the table to Atletico Madrid but claimed the Yellow Submarine came to shut up shop and were glad of the point.

“There was one team that wanted to win this match and that was us,” Nuno told the post-match Press conference.

“From the first minute we were looking to score and get the win. In the first half we didn’t get many chances but after the break we had our opportunities.

“However, I’m not going to spend too much time crying about it because I think we did a good job, although the result wasn’t one we expected. It would have been much fairer if we had won.”

Nuno refused to comment on opposing boss Marcelino’s complaint that the pitch was not watered beforehand.

“I don’t know what his anger is about. The only thing on my mind right now is to get some rest and then focus on the game with Athletic Bilbao.

“I really appreciate the effort my players put into this game and we finished much better than Villarreal, who were wasting time and looking to stop us. Perhaps Villarreal’s Coach should say something about that,” said Nuno, who was also unhappy with some of the referee’s decisions.

“The officials have a difficult job. I admire the referee’s work but the whole stadium saw there were two crucial decisions that the whole game hung on.

“Mario should have been shown a second yellow card and there was also a foul on Alvaro Negredo in the penalty area,” he lamented.
