Aguero backs Messi over injury

Sergio Aguero has defended Argentina teammate Lionel Messi after he pulled out of his country’s two recent friendlies in the United States.

The Barcelona star did not feature against either El Salvador or Ecuador with a swollen foot, while even national team boss Tata Martino issued an apology to fans, but Aguero says it was impossible for him to have played.

“Leo wanted to play. He always wants to play but this time he couldn’t” the Manchester City striker told reporters.

“The side of his foot was swollen and he was unable to put his boots on. He’s a bit annoyed about it because like me he always wants to play.

“But, as Tata said, the best thing is not to take any risks so that he can recover properly. There was no need to risk him.”

Reports in Spain say Messi is now struggling to be fit for Barca’s next La Liga fixture against Celta Vigo at Balaidos on Sunday.
