Taxman chases Barca midfielder Xavi

Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez is being investigated by the Spanish tax authorities, according to La Vanguardia.

The report claims the 35-year-old owes up to €4m in taxes connected to his image rights and money paid to his representatives by the club.

The Barcelona legend is the latest in a long line of players to come under scrutiny for unpaid taxes in Spain, with teammate Lionel Messi the most high profile of them.

Messi is believed to have paid the tax office around €56m in 2013, while defender Gerard Pique was also reported to have stumped up around €2.5m.

New York City striker David Villa was another who fell foul of the taxman, relating to the years 2009 and 2010 during his time with the Blaugrana.
