Pepe to renew until 2018?

Pepe is set to renew his contract with Real Madrid for a further two years, according to AS.

The 32-year-old has regained his first-choice centre-back status under Carlo Ancelotti and is only a few small details away from signing an extension until 2018.

According to the Spanish daily, Pepe dreams of being Los Blancos' John Terry, the latter of whom recently signalled his intention to see out the remainder of his career with Chelsea.

Initially a regular under Jose Mourinho, the defender lost his place in the first team to then-breakout star Raphael Varane and was subsequently linked with a move to Manchester City.

However, one of Ancelotti's first tasks at the Santiago Bernabeu was to veto the transfer and restore Pepe into the side, where his attitude and leadership has been recognised by the club's upper echelons.

Pepe's current deal expires at the end of next season and was originally expected to be renewed for only one year, but those plans seem to have been thrown out in favour of a two-year agreement.

On the other hand, AS believe Pepe's renewal may have ramifications on Varane's long-term future at Madrid.

Now 21, the Frenchman is keen on getting more playing time under his belt, but it remains to be seen how much longer he will accept deputising for both the Brazil-born stopper and Sergio Ramos.

Pepe joined Madrid from Porto in the summer of 2007 for €30m and has gone on to make almost 300 appearances for the capital giants.
