Miranda coy on Atleti future

Joao Miranda has refused to confirm whether he will extend his contract with Atletico Madrid beyond the end of next season.

The defender's deal expires in 2016 and no talks over a renewal have been scheduled as yet, while injuries and mounting competition from Jose Maria Gimenez have limited him to just 17 appearances in La Liga this term.

Speaking after Brazil's 3-1 friendly victory over France on Thursday, the 30-year-old insisted he was only thinking about seeing the next 15 months out with Los Colchoneros.

“[Diego Simeone] is an extraordinary Coach, and his renewal is great news for Atletico,” the he told AS.

“His winning spirit [differentiates him from other Coaches]. We know how important he is for this team. For many years, he'll have Atletico fighting for important things.

“I'm at ease [regarding my contract]. I have a contract for one more year and must only think about playing football, enjoying the minutes I get at Atletico and ensuring my team continue fighting for titles.

“I just want to finish [the remainder of my deal] strongly and enjoy every minute I spend at Atletico because they're a great team.

“No, [it's not a farewell]. I have another year left [on my contract] and I'll try to fulfil it.

“Competition is always good for a team like ours. A big team must have quality players ready to give everything.

“[Jose Maria] Gimenez, [Diego] Godin and I are fighting for playing time. They're both great players and we'll continue [in this manner].

“[Real] Madrid are one of the best teams in the world, but Atletico have already shown that they can play well in these kind of games. We believe we can progress [into the semi-finals].”
