Messi causes US frenzy

Lionel Messi was the centre of attention at Argentina’s training session in the United States on Wednesday.

His presence at Washington’s University of Georgetown training complex ahead of Saturday’s friendly with El Salvador at FedEx Field drew a large crowd, all wanting to witness the Barcelona superstar in action.

About 350 invited guests, primarily from the university, had been allowed inside the gates but as word spread through social media that Messi and the squad planned an afternoon session, several hundred people descended on the campus.

Fans, many of them in ‘Messi 10’ shirts, screamed his name and begged for autographs and to have their photograph taken with him.

“It looks like we are going to shatter all our attendance records,” joked Georgetown men’s soccer Coach Brian Wiese to the Washington Post.

Argentina will train in the US capital all week, play Saturday’s game and return there on Sunday and Monday before heading to New Jersey for Tuesday’s exhibition game against Ecuador at the MetLife Stadium.
