Morata: ‘Madrid didn’t treat me well’

Former Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata feels he wasn’t treated very well in his time at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The 22-year-old, who is currently with the Spain squad for the games with Ukraine and the Netherlands, joined Juventus last summer for a reported €20m with Madrid retaining the option to buy him back.

However, Morata told Onda Cero that he is so happy in Turin right now he cannot contemplate playing anywhere else.

“I’m really happy and comfortable at Juventus and couldn’t even begin to think about Madrid or any other team,” he confessed.

“Right now there is only Juve and La Roja in my head, although I’d like Madrid to win La Liga and Juventus the Champions League.

“I still don’t understand how at Madrid I went from playing well to sitting in the stands. I didn’t ask to be in the starting line-up and just wanted to be treated better.

“If you train well you should play in matches but that’s in the past. I can still get so much better in Italy.

“I didn’t speak much to [Madrid boss] Carlo Ancelotti. He said hello in the morning and gave me instructions before games, but the truth is that I didn’t have a lot to do with him.

“[Juventus boss] Massimiliano Allegri, for good and bad, pays me a lot of attention. Sometimes he even knows where I’ve been to dinner the night before!”

Morata, who made his La Roja debut against Belarus last November, told of his delight at once more being selected for Vicente del Bosque’s squad.

“Being here is amazing. I used to celebrate the team’s successes and now I’m one of them. I’m dreaming of scoring my first goal for Spain but it’s not an obsession. I’m trying to enjoy every minute here. All the same, I accept it’s time to start thinking about scoring.

“We still have players who are yet to come back from injury and that will make Spain even more dangerous,” he warned.
