La Roja door still open for Villa?

Striker David Villa may not have played his last game for Spain after boss Vicente del Bosque appeared to leave the door open for a sensational return.

The former Barcelona star, now plying his trade in Major League Soccer with New York City, stepped down from the national side after a miserable World Cup in Brazil last year.

However, Del Bosque told Spanish radio there is no reason why Villa, who has 97 caps for La Roja, should not go on to reach 100 caps.

“Sometimes there are exceptional cases and one of those is David,” remarked Del Bosque of the 33-year-old.

Villa was instrumental in Spain’s successes at Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup and has 59 goals for his country, while he has also made an impressive start in the United States by scoring New York’s first-ever home goal at Yankees stadium in the 2-0 win over New England Revolution.
