Benzema: ‘Madrid must believe’

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema insists his team must continue to believe despite the Clasico loss to Barcelona at the weekend.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men may have lost some ground in the title race but Benzema maintains the team have regained their self-confidence after an impressive performance at the Camp Nou.

“We must keep believing. Barca have some tough fixtures and they have to play Sevilla away and Valencia at home,” he told Marca ahead of training with the France national team in Clarefontaine.

“It’s up to us to win all our remaining games and hope Barcelona slip up somewhere. Anything can happen and we are not throwing in the towel.

“We are still focused on both La Liga and the Champions League.”

The Frenchman also commented on the back-heel that set up Cristiano Ronaldo for Madrid’s goal in the 2-1 defeat.

“When you are full of self-confidence you try that sort of thing. It’s part of my game and it set Cristiano up.

“I had my back to the goal and it was the best option. I’m going to keep trying it because I feel comfortable when I do it.

“When something like that comes off it’s like scoring a goal, especially in a Clasico. You enjoy it as much because it’s important to complete a good pass for someone to score.”

Benzema also highlighted the return of Luka Modric to the side after injury.

“It was great to have Modric back. He is always looking to attack and that’s why he is so important to us. We’ve missed him.”
