Marcelino ‘can’t explain’ Villarreal loss

Villarreal boss Marcelino said he was unable to explain how his team had succumbed 2-0 to Sevilla at El Madrigal on Sunday.

Second-half goals from Coke and Vitolo saw the Andalusians obtain a third win over Marcelino’s men in 10 days, although Marcelino felt they were lucky to have emerged victorious this time.

“After seeing the first half I had to check the score was 0-0 and it was difficult to explain,” he told reporters post-match.

“It was our best opening 45 minutes of the season despite lacking assertiveness. We tried everything we knew but were not capable and eventually lost.

“The difficult thing to take is that we created so many chances and failed to score. However, you need some good fortune in this game and Sevilla were extremely lucky, particularly in the first half.”

Marcelino believes that after the demands of the last few weeks the forthcoming international break will come at a good time for his players.

“We’ll have a chance to regain some strength, both physically and mentally, and we have 10m games left to prove we are a great team.

“We’ll be ambitious and try to beat last season’s points total,” he declared.
