Emilio Butragueno analysed Real Madrid’s 2-1 Clasico defeat to Barcelona and felt it was their inability to convert their chances that cost them.
However, the Madrid legend, now the club’s director of institutional relations, declared himself satisfied at the performance Carlo Ancelotti’s side put on at the Camp Nou.
“We are saddened at the result because in the first half we dominated them, created chances and played really well,” Butragueno told reporters.
“In such big games we know that everyone will have their moments but we didn’t take advantage of ours. We missed some clear chances.
“After we got back to 1-1 we were the superior team but at 2-1 we were a little down. In the end it was decided by two or three moves and they were more accurate.
“We had some very clear opportunities, particularly [Gareth] Bale’s following a corner. I tell you, we lacked that little bit of luck to get the second.
“I reckon if we had got that then we’d have given much more in the game. It’s a pity.”
The former striker noted that, despite the defeat, there are still enough games left in La Liga for Madrid to bridge the four-point gap to leaders Barca.
“There are 10 games to go. We must continue getting our injured players back. Modric had a great game, giving us security in midfield, while James [Rodriguez] will soon be back with us.
“Cristiano Ronaldo was also very good tonight and in the first half Karim Benzema was fantastic.
“There are still many challenges ahead and, of course, this team still has enormous potential,” he concluded.
