New faces in Spain squad

Sergio Asenjo, Mikel San Jose and Vitolo are the new faces called up by Spain for matches against Netherlands and Ukraine next week.

The Villarreal goalkeeper has successfully rebuilt his career at El Madrigal after spending several years in the wilderness at Atletico Madrid and replaces Kiko Casilla as La Roja’s third-choice glovesman.

Elsewhere, San Jose has been picked as a midfielder, rather than a defender, and will be hoping to secure his second cap for La Roja, while Vitolo has played a starring role in Sevilla’s recent matches.

Other notable inclusions are those of Mario Suarez, who takes advantage of injuries to numerous central midfielders, and both Sergio Busquets and Koke, whom are carrying knocks. Cesar Azpilicueta, however, is overlooked.

Finally, Pedro Rodriguez has seen off a late challenge from Alberto Bueno to keep his place in attack, despite his lack of first-team action for Barcelona.

La Roja host Ukraine in Euro 2016 qualifying next Friday, before gunning for World Cup revenge against Netherlands in friendly action the following Tuesday.

Spain squad in full: Casillas, De Gea, Asenjo; Juanfran, Carvajal, Pique, Bartra, Ramos, Albiol, Alba, Bernat; Mario, Busquets, San Jose, Silva, Pedro, Cesc, Cazorla, Iniesta, Koke, Isco; Vitolo, Costa, Morata
