Torres: This is what I wanted

Fernando Torres says nights such as Atletico Madrid’s Champions League win over Bayer Leverkusen are what he has been looking for.

Torres was a second half substitute as the Spanish champions dispatched the Bundesliga side on penalties, El Nino netting a decisive kick before Stefan Kiessling’s missed effort but Atleti through.

Having returned to Vicente Calderon in January, Torres said after the match that occasions like this are what brought him back to his first club.

“I’m happy, happy to see the stadium enjoy itself. I really wanted to experience these nights at the Calderon,” Torres said, AS reports.

“The last Champions League match I had here was when I was 11 or 12. To experience it on the pitch is impressive.

“I can only thank the fans. They were cheering until the end. They’re the best in the world. I’ve no doubts I’ll be successful here. It’s unforgettable.

“On top of that there are nights in the Champions League, gifts. It’s better than anything.

“I wanted to score my penalty for Koke. I stuck with my decision. The goalkeeper went the other way. I knew what I was going to do, inside the post, and it went well.

“We controlled the game, after scoring, but it wasn’t easy. The result isn’t unfair. There’s a lot of luck in penalties.

“Oblak? He deserves this. It’s not easy when you’re not playing but he had a great game and was instrumental for us. We’ll help him and help him grow. He can be our ‘keeper for years.”
