Weligton targets European spot

Malaga central defender Weligton says the club are still very much in the race for a European spot despite the 1-0 weekend defeat to Granada.

The Costa del Sol outfit are currently seventh on 41 points, eight points clear of the chasing Athletic Bilbao and seven points behind Villarreal, but the Brazilian insists his team will still keep fighting until the end of the season despite top-flight safety having already been assured.

“We have a team that continues to improve and if people think we will be sitting back because we are safe they are wrong,” declared Weligton at a Press conference.

“We are going to fight to get into Europe and after the next two or three games we’ll see what we can aspire to.

“To catch Villarreal in sixth we need to win against Cordoba on Sunday. The other teams around us also have some difficult games coming up but we must concentrate on doing our own job.”

Whatever happens, Weligton maintains it has already been a good season for Javi Gracia’s men.

“Every season has its positive and negative aspects but I think this one has had a special flavour because we’ve undergone some changes at the club. We have some new players and a new Coach who nobody was counting on.

“All teams have tried to go down the same road, taking advantage of their home-grown players, and those of us with more experience want to carry on contributing to the team.

“However, we are entering a part of the season where it is very difficult to score away from home because the teams from us downwards are still playing to avoid relegation.

“Every game from now on will be even harder to win,” he asserted.
