Forlan: ‘Mou not right for Madrid’

Diego Forlan believes Jose Mourinho was not the right man to coach Real Madrid, although he admits the current Chelsea boss did well there.

Writing his weekly column in The National, the former Villarreal, Manchester United, Atletico Madrid and Inter striker gave his thoughts on the Portuguese’s coaching methods during his time in Spain.

“I don’t think he was really the right person for the Madrid job but there’s no doubt he did well,” maintained the Uruguayan.

“He won La Liga, the Copa del Rey and improved the team’s progress in Europe during a time when Barcelona were the best team in the world and the dominant force.

“Mourinho was up against a few problems but passed the test to become Madrid’s Coach by beating Barca at the Bernabeu, although he got criticised for his ultra-defensive tactics,

“But what else could he do? Barca had the better players but it was Mourinho who got the result.”

Forlan feels the Madrid job is one of the toughest in football, while some of the players at the club did not exactly see eye-to-eye with Mourinho.

“Managing the dressing room there is difficult for any Coach, even someone like Mourinho. Some players accept his support but others were against him because he tried to do things that were not in line with how things have always been done at Madrid.

“In Spain, some thought he was a madman but he is far from that. All he wants is complete control,” maintained Forlan.
