Sergio calls for Espanyol unity

Espanyol boss Sergio Gonzalez called for his players to pull together following the 1-0 defeat to Real Sociedad at Anoeta.

Sergio Canales capitalised on an error by Espanyol goalkeeper Kiko Casilla seven minutes before the break to ensure Los Pericos remain in mid-table, with Sergio admitting to reporters it had been a difficult week for his players.

“Football has been pretty tough on Espanyol this week,” said Sergio, who saw his side knocked out of the Copa del Rey at the semi-final stage by Athletic Bilbao last Wednesday.

“However, we must now pull together and become even stronger because unity is strength.

“The mistake Kiko made could happen to anyone and in the second half we wanted to turn it around for him. It was a shame, but these things happen.”

The Espanyol Coach was asked about Sergio Garcia’s name being linked this week with alleged match-fixing involving Osasuna, but feels his captain is not being affected by it.

“As I’ve said previously, he does not look any different. If these things had not come out his face would still have looked the same in training,” he insisted.
