Raphael Varane has conceded that Real Madrid are not at their best following Saturday’s 1-0 defeat by Athletic Bilbao in La Liga.
Los Blancos have now picked up just one point from a possible six following Aritz Aduriz’s winner at San Mames, leaving the French defender under no illusions as to the predicament his side currently find themselves in.
“The game was decided by small details,” he told reporters.
“We couldn’t find that decisive pass, and in the end that proved costly.
“We’re not at our best and must solve [our problems] calmly. We have to be focused on what lies ahead.
“We know [the Clasico] will be a very important game and we’ll prepare for it well with the matches against Schalke and Levante [beforehand].
“We’re aware of the need to improve things.”
