Tebas: ‘La Liga facing vital month’

La Liga President Javier Tebas believes the next few weeks could define the future of Spanish football.

The distribution of television rights in Spain are expected to reach between €1bn and €1.1bn this season, while Tebas feels it is vital the game’s hierarchy get things right if they are to challenge the Premier League in income.

“Whatever happens in the next few days, the next month will outline the future of Spanish football,” declared Tebas at a conference in Alicante organised by the Association of Spanish Sports Journalists.

“With regards the Premier League, they are driving a Ferrari and we are at the crossroads. If we don’t double our paying subscribers to football (from four to eight million) then it will be impossible to catch them.

“I don’t have anything against the Spanish Football Association, but I do against its leaders.”

Tebas was also quick to denounce all acts of violence associated with the sport, particularly in light of recent events both on and off the terraces, adding that “even journalists can be referred to the Anti-Violence Commission” when alluding to the media’s role in the matter.
