Marcelino ‘proud’ of Villarreal

Villarreal boss Marcelino said he was proud of his players despite Wednesday’s 3-1 second-leg Copa del Rey semi-final defeat to Barcelona.

The Catalans ran out 6-2 aggregate winners at El Madrigal, having won the first leg by a similar scoreline, and Marcelino was left to regret his side’s lack of assertiveness in attack.

“We were not decisive enough but I don’t think any team has thrown so much at Barca and created so much danger,” he told reporters at the post-match Press conference.

“We should be proud as we fought to win and dominated a lot of phases in the game. Also, if we’d have finished with 11 men it would have given us more options.

“But they need very little to score a goal. For example, they went in front with the first chance of the match, although we also had lots of opportunities after that.

“I never thought we could dominate them and have so much of the ball. My players, with their ambition and energy, made that possible.

“We are sorry for not being able to reach the final but are extremely proud of what this team is doing and how it’s grown.”
