‘Fortune must favour Villarreal’

Marcelino has admitted that Villarreal need fortune to favour them if they are to turn around their Copa del Rey semi-final against Barcelona on Wednesday.

The Yellow Submarine head into this evening’s second leg on the back of a 3-1 defeat from the curtain raiser at Camp Nou three weeks ago, but the Coach is backing fate to help his side defy the odds.

“We aspire to everything we can [aspire to]. We’re going to leave everything [on the pitch] and hopefully we get it right,” he said at a Press conference.

“We believe we can win the match with our philosophy of the game.

“[Barca] didn’t win anything last season but are in the last four [this season] and clear favourites [to win the tie].

“We must unleash our momentum. Our enthusiasm and desire to win never end, but we can’t just win with heart. We must also be very intelligent.

“We will try to organise ourselves, be solid [at the back], bold, precise and quick when we have the ball, but it’ll be very difficult.

“We’re all aware that it’ll be a very difficult game, but it’s one we all want to play in.

“We know Barca are better than they were last season, especially in their performance levels.

“Their scores are similar [to last season] but their sensations on the pitch are superior to anyone else in the country.

“We shouldn’t be obsessed with anything, we have to start the game with the intention of winning.

“We must work for every ball and not become obsessed with the fact we have to score two goals to progress. We mustn’t think about the score.

“Either way, the honey will stay on our lips or we’ll experience immense joy.

“To beat a big club, you must have a great day [at the office] and hope they don’t have one. Then you need a degree of luck.

“During our best spells this season, we had those little nuances of luck. The small details didn’t favour us against Barca [in the first leg].

“To stand with a chance of eliminating Barca ahead of a cup final is a dream which all professionals have once thought about.

“We must try to put the game on our side with great effort and with these favourable details.

“Logic sometimes doesn’t exist in football, so I think fate can sometimes decide what will happen. Hopefully with much work, [we can reach the final].”
