Bayern Munich centre-back Jerome Boateng has revealed that he turned down an offer from Barcelona last summer.
La Blaugrana eventually reinforced their defence with the signings of Douglas Pereira, Thomas Vermaelen and Jeremy Mathieu during pre-season, but the 26-year-old claims he was also approached by the club.
“I really don’t know exactly how Barcelona’s offer came about, but it’s true that I received an offer [from them],” the former Manchester City and Hamburg stopper told Sport Bild.
“If a club like Barca show an interest in you then of course it’s a huge honour.
“Today, you no longer have to go from Bayern to Barcelona if you want to win the Champions League.”
Boateng would have been the second German World Cup-winning defender to join a team in La Liga after Shkodran Mustafi, who joined Valencia.
