Cerezo: Cholo deal a formality

Enrique Cerezo has reiterated his belief that he does not expect any hitches when Diego Simeone eventually signs his new Atletico Madrid contract.

The Coach’s current deal with Los Colchoneros expires in the summer of 2017 but the club are keen to extend his stay further, with Tiago recently admitting he would love to see El Cholo create a dynasty comparable to Alex Ferguson’s at Manchester United in the Spanish capital.

“We’re always working with the future in mind and I think we’ll have more conversations,” the President told Radio Marca.

“I don’t think there’ll be any problems [with Simeone’s renewal]. I think Cholo is needed at Atletico Madrid and has carved out an important niche at this club.

“He knows it, we know it and I think you [journalists] will agree. Regardless, he still has another two years on his contract.

“With the squad we currently have, I don’t think we need much else. The coaches will decide on who else needs to be signed.

“[On speculation that bigger clubs are looking at Antoine Griezemann], players can play wherever they want, but Griezmann feels very well here.

“He’s had a taste of what it’s like to play for Atletico, in front of a crowd which loves him and especially a group of players who are very happy with him.”
