Schalke open to Khedira arrival

Schalke Coach Roberto Di Matteo has admitted that the Royal Blues’ doors are open to Sami Khedira if the Real Madrid midfielder is serious about joining them.

Reports earlier in the week suggested Los Blancos’ opponents in the Champions League last 16 were closing in on the 27-year-old’s signature in light of the fact that his contract was due to expire at the end of the season.

“[Sami] Khedira? We all know he’s a great player,” the former Chelsea boss told the German media on Thursday.

“If he wants to join us, our doors are open to him. He’s a world-class footballer.”

Schalke sporting director Horst Heldt, however, was less forthcoming on the topic of Khedira’s arrival, although he stopped short of ruling out his club’s interest in the World Cup winner.

“I’ve read that Sami interests us, but we’ve never entered the speculation game,” he stated.

“There are many interesting players in the market.”
