Bartomeu: Barca deserved win, but…

Josep Maria Bartomeu says that while Barcelona deserved their 2-1 win at Manchester City, the tie is still open ahead of the return leg in three weeks’ time.

La Blaugrana looked to be on their way towards a commanding away advantage in their Champions League last-16 tie on Tuesday until Sergio Aguero pulled a goal back for the English champions and Lionel Messi saw a late penalty saved.

“We had a great game. The fans saw a team who played good football, won and demonstrated their quality,” the President said after the game.

“It’s a deserved result, which leaves the tie open, but it’s not a negative one. It’s always important to win.

“We played against City, one of the best teams in Europe. We’re still in three competitions and have given a very good account of ourselves, so I’m happy.

“If we fail to score a goal [in the second leg], nothing changes but we’ll have to fight and win to advance to the quarter-finals.

“The League this year will be very long. The Clasico will be played soon, but the title won’t be decided in that game.

“The important thing is to still be in three competitions. It’s what the socios want.”
