Simeone open to Atleti renewal

Diego Simeone welcomed talk of an extended Atletico Madrid contract and reflected on the comfortable win over Almeria.

Two goals from Antoine Griezmann and a Mario Mandzukic penalty sent the champions into a 3-0 lead before half-time and that’s how the score stayed until the final whistle.

The victory came on the day that it was reported Atletico were looking to renew Cholo’s contract and keep him at Vicente Calderon for a further five years.

“Obviously I’m very happy at the club. I love Atleti and we are trying to continue this project we started three years ago,” Simeone said, AS reports.

“Both parties value the other with the same enthusiasm and willingness. Hopefully, as has always been the case until now, we find agreement to have a more important Atletico.”

On the match, Simeone acknowledged the importance of the win after Atletico were beaten by Celta Vigo in their last match, but again distanced the team from the title race.

“It was essential and is welcome after [losing to Celta],” he admitted.

“It makes us rediscover the moments of good play and especially with the result. It was pretty clear. The team pushed, was intense and was able to attack with great speed and intensity.

“We believe we’re in a direct fight with Sevilla and Valencia. The League has grown well. Valencia and Sevilla make it more competitive and the League is more than Real Madrid and Barcelona.

“Griezmann is more decisive [as a second striker] than when playing on the wing because he is further from the penalty area. His contribution has been enormous.”
