‘Madrid on their way towards No 11’

Marcelo believes Real Madrid are on the right path towards a second consecutive Champions League after Wednesday’s 2-0 victory over Schalke in the last 16.

The Brazilian left-back secured Los Blancos’ first-leg advantage with a strike from the edge of the box at Veltins-Arena, and he expressed his delight at having been able to honour not only his team, but also his family in light of their newest addition.

“In the Champions League, anything can happen. We’re humble and must still work hard to win the tie,” he said after the match.

“We fought hard and Schalke are a great team. We have the great advantage of two goals, but nothing’s assured.

“Real Madrid must always go to the death. We must revisit the path we took last year, and we’re on our way [towards doing that].

“The truth is that the goal was for my newborn niece, but I wanted to celebrate the goal with everyone because [Madrid] are a family.

“The grass wasn’t very good, but we must nonetheless give our best and ignore the grass.

“Cristiano’s not obsessed with the goal. The goal comes when the team works [hard].”
