‘The door’s open for Villarreal’

Villarreal goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo can see a way to the Copa del Rey final despite losing the first-leg of the semi-final to Barcelona.

The Yellow Submarine were beaten 3-1 at Camp Nou but Manu Trigueros’ second half goal keeps the tie alive, according to Asenjo.

“It’s complicated and negative, yet the door is left open to go through,” he said, Marca reports.

“It is very complicated but let’s give our all. If we do things right at El Madrigal we can get ahead and go through.

“In the League match [which ended 3-2 to Barca on February 1] we did a lot of damage on the counter-attack but here with [Gerard] Pique and [Jeremy] Mathieu they had a lot of control.

“Manu’s goal keeps us alive. We’ll see what happens in El Madrigal with our supporters.”

Asenjo also discussed his penalty save from Neymar, and put the stop down to luck as much as anything.

“Last year I let one in and more or less did the same. Penalties, if they are well-struck, are goals, but today I had the fortune to guess the right way,” he admitted.

“Barcelona have magnificent penalty takers and both Lionel Messi and Neymar usually score. On this occasion I was lucky enough to keep it out.”
