Masch: Messi is infectious

Javier Mascherano has reiterated his belief that Lionel Messi is the best player of all time, describing his Barcelona and Argentina teammate as ‘infectious’.

The No 10 has rediscovered his best form since the turn of the year, with nine goals in his last six matches for the Catalans, including a hat-trick against Deportivo La Coruna, and the midfielder claims his fellow Argentine is a hugely-influential figure.

“Lionel [Messi]’s in a very good run of form, and when he plays well the team automatically level up,” he told ESPN Radio in Argentina.

“Hopefully it stays this way. We need Messi at this level because he’s the player who makes the difference. His football also infects others.

“Messi’s been the best for the last five years. I never saw Pele and [Alfredo] Di Stefano play [live] and I only saw a little bit of [Diego] Maradona.

“Although it’s difficult to compare [Maradona and Messi] because they’re both from different eras, from what I’ve seen, for me Messi is the best.”
