Mallorca: Karpin out, Soler in

Mallorca have sacked Coach Valeri Karpin and brought in former defender Miquel Soler as his replacement.

Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Leganes was their 11th of the season and third on the bounce, leaving the islanders in 15th place, just three points above the Segunda Liga relegation zone.

News of Karpin’s departure was supposed to have broken after the match, following a meeting between sporting director Miguel Angel Nadal and new owner Utz Claassen, but severance pay proved a stumbling block.

However, Mallorca have now announced on their official website that a package has finally been agreed, with both the club and Karpin parting on good terms.

Karpin, a former Russia international best known for his spells with Valencia, Real Sociedad and Celta Vigo, had only taken charge of the side in August but could not inspire a promotion challenge.

In his place comes B-team boss Soler, who enjoyed a successful five-year spell with Los Bermellones between 1998 and 2003, having won the Copa del Rey and regularly qualified for the Champions League.
