RFEF reject Madrid’s Marcelo appeal

Real Madrid’s appeal for Marcelo’s one-match ban to be rescinded in time for Saturday’s derby with Atletico Madrid has been rejected by RFEF.

The left-back incurred the suspension following his accumulation of five yellow cards against Sevilla on Wednesday, but TV replays showed that contact between himself and Vitolo in the build-up to his booking was marginal.

Los Blancos used video evidence to support their case, but the governing body’s Competitions Committee concluded during an emergency meeting on Thursday that referee Ignacio Iglesias Villanueva made the correct call.

According to AS, Madrid will meet the Appeals Committee on Friday in a last-ditch effort to ensure Marcelo’s availability for the trip to Vicente Calderon and may seek an injunction to push the case back if all else fails.

However, the Competitions Committee did annul the yellow card issued to Raphael Varane in the same match on the grounds that his yellow for deliberate handball was accidental.
