Marcelo has slammed referee Ignacio Iglesias Villanueva’s decision to book him during Real Madrid’s 2-1 victory over Sevilla on Wednesday.

The left-back will miss Los Blancos’ crunch trip to Atletico Madrid at the weekend as a result of the yellow card he incurred for a challenge on Vitolo, although TV replays showed the judgment to be excessive.

“I’m happy with the result, the three points we achieved were very difficult,” he said after the match.

“I’m not angry about the yellow, although we all saw that I didn’t touch [Vitolo].

“You have to approach each game with intensity and not go thinking about the next one, but I never touched him.

“I want to be available for Madrid. I don’t know what will happen, but I hope [my ban] gets rescinded.

“It was a very strange game, we got the first goal when they were pressing a lot, but all teams come to the Bernabeu to win, and we had to suffer for the win.

“They’re significant casualties, but we have a very good squad. We saw Nacho have a great game [in Ramos’ absence], [Raphael] Varane too.

“I live thinking about the next game, living each one as if it were the only one. I don’t think beyond that. I’m happy to be here. I have breaking Roberto Carlos’ [appearance] record in mind.

“We’ll be thinking about Atletico [Madrid], another tough match. We know they’re a very good team, but we’ll try to win there.”
