FIFA demands ‘experience’ from Figo

FIFA will ask Luis Figo to show he has at least two years’ experience in football administration in order to be a candidate for their presidency.

The Portuguese, who played for Sporting, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Inter in an illustrious career, has presented his candidacy for FIFA President with the support of Portugal, Montenegro, Macedonia, Luxembourg, Denmark and Poland.

Spain, meanwhile, have chosen not to back him with the Spanish Federation giving their vote to Sepp Blatter, who is seeking a fifth term of office at the helm of world football’s governing body.

FIFA are set to analyse the various bids before drawing their conclusions next week, yet while Figo has been involved with Inter since hanging up his boots in 2009 he may not satisfy the relevant criteria.

FIFA’s member associations have proposed four candidates for the elections, which will take place in Zurich on May 29 this year: Jordanian HRH Prince Ali Bin Hussein, former Ajax President Michael van Praag, Blatter and Figo.
