JIM: ‘Home form the key’

Almeria boss Juan Ignacio Martinez believes the key to his team staving off relegation this term lies in their home form.

Martinez saw his players record their first home win of the season against Getafe on Sunday, Edgar Mendez claiming the game’s only goal and lifting the Andalusian out of the bottom three, and the 50-year-old feels it gives them hope they might be able to avoid drop.

“I thought we deserved the win because we fought harder and created more opportunities than Getafe,” he told reporters post-match.

“The team played wel,l even if at certain times we seemed to suffer a mental block, but it’s a vital result for us as a large percentage of the points needed to make sure you don’t go down come from your home games

“When I first came here I said I wanted to turn our stadium into a fortress so we could continue to enjoy playing in the top flight.

“But I don’t think it’s right to single out any one player today because everyone deserves top marks and it was a hard-fought win.

“It’s our first home victory and helps us to move away from the bottom three.”
