Valverde on Athletic ‘turning point’

Ernesto Valverde has claimed that Athletic Bilbao’s trip to Levante on Sunday will prove to be a turning point in the club’s season.

Despite reaching the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey and the Europa League last 32, the Basques have slumped to 14th place in La Liga, with no wins in their last seven League matches, including five defeats during that time.

“It’s an opportunity to distance ourselves from the relegation zone and find our rhythm in La Liga. It’s a turning point in our season," the Coach said at a Press conference.

“Several of our players are a little tired [following Thursday’s Copa del Rey match against Malaga].

“It’s an important test because there’s not been much time for recovery and points are becoming increasingly important for both ourselves and our opponents.

“We’re facing this match with greater confidence [after the win against Malaga]. If we can keep up this momentum against Levante, we’ll have many opportunities to move forward.

"We've spoken in the dressing room. We’re still in three competitions, we just need respite to prepare for each game, but we know we're playing for a lot in the League.

“We’re on a losing streak, which we want to end, but the players are psyched up. We must persevere.

“Levante know how to handle these situations [of fighting relegation] like what they’re going through right now. They’re second from bottom in the table and know what they’re playing for.

“Levante won’t be fooled by anyone. They play from the back, counter and strategically and have done so for several years.

“This year they’ve found it difficult to win matches, like everyone else, but they know what’s at stake.

“It’s not the first time we’ve tried to sign a player [in January, referring to their failed pursuit of Asier Illarremendi], but what’s happened has happened.

“People have to understand that the [January] market isn’t easy for Athletic because the players we want are already at great teams, so it’s difficult for them to leave.”
