‘Sevilla don’t want Espanyol revenge’

Unai Emery insists Sevilla will not be seeking revenge when they face Espanyol for a third time in the space of 10 days on Sunday.

The Andalucians were dumped out of the Copa del Rey midweek following a 3-2 aggregate defeat to Los Periquitos, but the Coach maintains his players are only focused on returning to winning ways after also losing to Valencia in La Liga last time out.

“We won’t face our opponents with a vengeance. Instead, we want to regain continuity in La Liga,” he told reporters.

“We now have a better understanding of our rivals. The door is closed on the Copa [del Rey], but it’s still open in La Liga and the Europa League. We still have many dreams [to realise].

“The accumulation of matches causes physical and emotional exhaustion, so I must evaluate the condition of my players in training ahead of the game. I need 11 players with strength.

“I’m expecting a team [Espanyol] who will defend well and ask a lot of us. They’re also going through their best run of the season.

“I’m aware of Thursday’s disappointment of Thursday, but it’s part of our learning curve because whatever happens to these players will allow them to grow and get them used to the high demands of this club.”
