Ronaldo banned for two matches

Cristiano Ronaldo will miss Real Madrid's next two matches following his straight red card at Cordoba last weekend.

The forward kicked out at opposing left-back Edimar during Los Blancos' 2-1 victory at Nuevo Arcangel, and La Liga's Competition Committee have now announced the severity of the Portuguese's suspension.

Consequently, Ronaldo will be ineligble for Saturday's visit of Real Sociedad and the deferred trip to Sevilla, which was pushed back as a result of Madrid's Club World Cup participation in December.

However, he will be back in time for the Madrid derby with Atletico Madrid next Saturday, but he could return sooner if the capital giants successfully appeal the decision within the next 10 days.

A straight red is normally worthy of just a one-match ban, but referee Alejandro Jose Hernandez Hernandez's assessment that Ronaldo "kicked an opponent without playing the ball" appears to have swayed the committee's hand.
