Messi gives Barca advantage

Barcelona took charge of their Copa del Rey quarter-final with Atletico Madrid thanks to Lionel Messi's contentious penalty at Camp Nou on Wednesday.

Despite naming a full-strength outfield line-up, Luis Enrique selected Marc-Andre ter Stegen in goal for the visit of Los Colchoneros. The Asturian's adversary Diego Simeone, meanwhile, kept his faith in cup glovesman Jan Oblak, with Joao Miranda and Antoine Griezmann also coming into the fold.

The Catalans dominated possession in the opening stages, showcasing their famed, one-touch football on occasions, but chances came few and far between in the first half.

Neymar forced Oblak into early action with a fine snapshot from distance, before Lionel Messi ballooned an effort in the box, having been superbly picked out by Ivan Rakitic.

However, the best chance of the half undoubtedly fell to Suarez, who was found by the Croatian in the area, yet the forward somehow dinked the ball over the crossbar.

The second half was more of the same, with Atleti continuing to squeeze every last drop of space for Barca to exploit, although they failed to offer much of a goal threat.

The first controversial moment came three quarters of the way in as Suarez was booked for dissent, although replays showed Gabi to handball Andres Iniesta's strike on the edge of the box.

Seconds later, Arda Turan was shown a yellow card for a similar offence in his own half, leading to Javier Mascherano talking his way into the referee's book for perceived inconsistencies.

Nonetheless, Barca eventually found a route to goal through Messi, who capitalised on Juanfran's foul on Sergio Busquets in the box, although contact appeared minimal.

The Argentine failed to beat Jan Oblak the first time around, the Slovene guessing correctly to his left, but the No 10 promptly swept up the rebound to make it advantage Barca ahead of next week's return leg at Vicente Calderon.
