Cruyff blasts ‘ridiculous’ CR7 choice

Johan Cruyff has lambasted FIFA for their ‘ridiculous’ decision to award Cristiano Ronaldo the 2014 Ballon d’Or.

The Real Madrid forward was officially pronounced the world’s best player for a second year running last week, but the Barcelona legend suggested the criteria in electing a winner was systematically flawed.

“At the highest level of football, you must combine individual talent and titles,” he told De Telegraaf.

“From this point of view, it’s ridiculous that for the second consecutive year, FIFA has given the award to a player who did not play exceptionally well but won most of the titles.

“Two years ago, Bayern won everything they could, yet the award went to Cristiano Ronaldo instead of Toni Kroos or any other Bayern payer.

“In 2014, Kroos was again instrumental in the team who won the World Cup, yet he weren’t even among the three finalists.

“Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo was a spectator at the World Cup… Obviously I can’t take this trophy seriously, FIFA.”
