‘Bayern the right move for me’

Former Real Madrid and Spain midfielder Xabi Alonso believes he made the right decision in joining Bayern Munich prior to the start of the season.

The 33-year-old swapped the Santiago Bernabeu for the Allianz Arena at the end of August, despite lifting both the Champions League and Copa del Rey with Los Blancos last term, and has since developed into a key player under fellow Spaniard Pep Guardiola.

“I came here to try something new, discover the Bundesliga and play for a very special club like Bayern. Now I can say it: it was a great move in my career,” he told reporters.

“Our legs and minds have been rested, and now we’re ready to face the decisive phase of the season.

“Like the rest of the team, I’ve worked very hard to be in my best possible condition and help the team in the best way possible.

“I want to be ready for the big games coming up in the second half of the season. [At Bayern], we all have high targets.

“When you’re in the midfield, you can’t stay on the ball for too long, so you must release it many, many times, preferably quickly.

“That’s what I always try to do, I’m the one who moves the ball from one side to another, from defence to attack.

“My job is to keep the game flowing, controlling the tempo. It’s my character.”
