Escriba unhappy despite Levante win

Fran Escriba was criticial of Elche’s defending during their 1-0 win against Levante on Sunday.

The Valencians recorded back-to-back victories in La Liga for the first time this season thanks to Jonathas’ early goal, but the Coach felt Faycal Fajr’s penalty miss was more important in determining the match's final outcome.

“A key moment in the match was when we missed the penalty because we were playing well. Then, after the break, nerves took hold of us,” he told reporters.

“We needed to defend better with the ball. When you go 1-0 up, you always think that you’ll end up winning.

“Winning the match and ending the first round of fixtures, similar to last year, doesn’t guarantee anything, but it shows the commitment of the squad.

“Staying up will be very difficult, but it’s not impossible. My players train too much for people to say we’re lucky.

“No-one at the club’s given me an explanation [about our plans in the transfer market]. Players who we targeted are signing for other teams.”
