‘Messi at a world-class level’

Luis Enrique insists Lionel Messi has always performed at a 'world-class level' after the Argentine's hat-trick during Barcelona’s 4-0 win at Deportivo La Coruna.

The No 10 has employed a deeper role under the Asturian Coach this season, switching to the right-hand side from his usual central position, but nonetheless netted the 30th treble of his senior Blaugrana career on Sunday.

“We’ve always had defensive intensity away from home,” he told reporters after the match.

“The improvement has been in creating more clear danger and stopping our opponents’ counterattacks.

“There are many solutions yet very little space to score, so we must demonstrate our quality. That gives us more options in front of goal.

“There’s no way of being faithful to everyone. I put out the side I felt would work best. The more players who can join the cause, the stronger we are.

“Messi’s been at a high level all season. He hasn’t dropped [his standards] at any time. He’s playing at a world-class level.

“Anoeta was a while back. You have good, bad and regular matches, plus it depends on your opponents.

“We must be competitive and efficient in defence and attack. We can improve in both aspects, but the wins help.”
