‘Athletic starting from scratch’

Ernesto Valverde believes Athletic Bilbao are starting from scratch now the first half of the season is over and done with.

Los Leones were beaten by Villarreal to end the first round of Primera games in the bottom half of the table, but the Coach believes matters will improve at San Mames.

“We performed with distinction in the Champions League, we’re clear of danger in the League and we’re through in the Cup,” Valverde argued, AS reports, when asked about the August to January period.

“I hope we can improve in the League. We have to start from scratch and think that we can do better.

“We’re in three competitions and we have to have maximum concentration.”

With reference to the game at El Madrigal, Valverde felt there was little between the sides.

“Villarreal’s first goal hurt us. The game was even and we were doing well,” he insisted.

“The goal forced us to push forward a little more and that came in handy for Villarreal because they have very quick players.”
