‘Sevilla-Malaga like a final’

Unai Emery believes Sevilla’s visit of Malaga on Sunday could prove decisive in the race for Champions League qualification.

Just five points separate the two Andalucian clubs ahead of this weekend’s encounter at Sanchez Pizjuan, but the Coach has urged his side to grasp their latest opportunity.

“We’re aware that in order to be happy, you must keep on winning. If we have done something positive, we must continue to do so,” he told reporters.

“There’s no euphoria or satisfaction yet, we must only think about improving, showing consistency and being competitive.

“We have a game with opponents who will provide a measure stick for us. They’re direct rivals of ours now, so it’ll be like a mini-final.

“There will be moments [in this match] which can prove decisive, and this game can be [decisive].

“Malaga have earned results at our stadium in the past. They’ve improved this season, with a squad which possesses character.

“They have very good players, and for them it’s a challenge to get the three points. [Javi] Gracia’s preparing his team to hurt us.

“We’re focusing on points, not position. The next game is a huge opportunity for us, so we must make the most of our time and use all the energy we have. We have a responsibility to our fans.

“For now, we’re focusing on the League, but the Copa [del Rey] can accompany us. I see alternatives, I see performances and eagerness [from all the players].

“The collective should always be greater than the individual. It makes me happy when I see all the players perform, even when I make nine changes for a game.

“The club are working on [a deal for Lucho Gonzalez], and we’re awaiting his possible arrival.

“A win, [which would mark their best-ever start to a La Liga season], would tell us that we’re comfortable and strong.

“But we must know how to live through these type of moments in football. We need balance and must distance ourselves from the euphoria.”
