Godin: Torres was spectacular

Diego Godin hailed Fernando Torres' 'spectacular' performance during Atletico Madrid's 2-2 draw with Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey last night.

The returning striker scored two goals in one match against Los Colchoneros' bitter rivals for the first time in his career on Thursday, helping his side set up a quarter-final date with Barcelona.

“Fernando and Antoine [Griezmann] had a spectacular game, not only in attack but also at the back,” the Uruguayan told reporters.

“Fernando brings other things to the table, he offers more pace [than Mario Mandzukic], but we felt comfortable playing as a team.

“It's important that our hard work results in goals. We're happy for Torres. He gave a rounded performance and the goals will give him confidence.

"We all agree that Torres has generated a buzz amongst the fans. He needed a game like that. We've played well at the Santiago Bernabeu lately, but the important thing was to win the tie.

"The first goal was important, but the second was decisive. They came at us from all angles.

“We defended as best we could, but our objective was to qualify, regardless of the outcome. We showed courage.”
