Pepe could be out for up to a fortnight after the defender suffered bruised ribs during Real Madrid's 2-2 draw with Atletico Madrid last night.

The Portuguese managed just an hour of the Copa del Rey last-16 second leg before he was replaced by Raphael Varane, and Los Blancos have now confirmed the extent of his setback.

“After tests conducted on our player Pepe by Real Madrid's medical services at the Sanitas La Moraleja Hospital, he has been diagnosed with a rib contusion,” read a statement on Madrid's official website.

Pepe requested the change after he came off worse from a 50-50 challenge with Raul Garcia, in which both players struggled to vie for the ball.

As a result, the stopper is set to miss his side's upcoming trips to Getafe and Cordoba, while it remains to be seen whether he will regain fitness in time for the visit of Real Sociedad on January 31.
