Raul refuses to compare Madrid sides

Real Madrid legend Raul Gonzalez has declined to draw comparisons between his ‘Galactico’ side and Carlo Ancelotti’s current team.

However, in an interview conceded to ESPN, the 37-year-old New York Cosmos striker did recall that following the arrivals of Ronaldo Nazario and David Beckham the club failed to win a single European Cup.

“I don’t like to make comparisons because every era is different, but having won ‘La Decima’ this team has shown it has a lot of character,” he said.

“I can’t recall exactly when we started to get called ‘Galacticos’. I think it was after we signed Ronaldo and Beckham, or at some point between their arrivals, but we didn’t win a Champions League title.

“People remember that era because Florentino Perez worked really hard to raise the club’s international profile and it was a great time to be at Madrid.

“As a professional it was amazing to play alongside such great player, although the truth is that we didn’t win as much as people think.

“David Beckham only won the League once and that was after Fabio Capello told him he wasn’t going to play for the club again.

“However, he did do and went on to win La Liga quite heroically. But that was back in 2007,” he concluded.
